Sparing the birch

Birch trees come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and colours.

Given the right conditions some species can grow to be 80 feet, but they are few and far between.

That said last week I was called to a job which involved a really chunky specimen.

It was a fine tree but, as I have tried to show on the picture, it was blocking light to the top floor windows of the building next to it.

The solution was simple;, reduce the crown by about a quarter. Not a difficult job if you know what you are doing, but just having a bit of a hack will probably kill the tree.

So before starting work I needed to think carefully; the key is to make all cuts to a growth point.

This both maximises healing and prevents die back.

I am pleased to say that after its haircut the tree not only looked much better but will grow healthily into old age.

Oh, and the neighbours were happy as well!
